First blog post for Girls4Sports - Gender Inequality in Sports

Sweat running down your back, the wind rushing through your hair - and best of all - adrenaline coursing through your veins, can you guess what I’m referring to? Sports of course! There’s a sport out there for everyone, from dancing to football, it's such a varied group of activities (the actual definition is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” but who’s keeping track?). Anyone can get involved in sports - you can join teams at your school, get private coaching, or even just learn how to play yourself!

However, there is a huge gender gap in sports. Only about 17.9% of professional athletes are female. To put that number into perspective, of the 11,800 athletes in the US only about 2,112 are women. This gender gap can be seen everywhere, and it's not going to get better on its own. So, why not help fix it by starting with sports?

If you’re not already involved in a sport - get out there and try out for a team! You might fall on your face a few times (or your butt - ice skating) but eventually, you’ll get used to it. (Trust me - I can't count how many times I've failed at even just hitting a ball.) Sports help teach valuable lessons - teamwork, leadership, time management, resilience, coping with loss, and so much more! Even Michelle Obama agrees - she's "seen the difference" that sports have on people. They help build important life skills, which is why it's so important for everyone to have access to them. It's also a great way to spend your free time. If you already have, consider getting younger kids involved by offering summer classes (bonus: they count as community service!). It’s so much fun (if you like working with kids), especially if you rope your friends into it! But even if you’ve just joined Girls4Sports, that’s already the first step! (If you haven’t done that yet, make sure to check out the rest of our site and become a member!)

Taking even small steps is so important - anything helps. Those small things accumulate and end up contributing to making a real difference. Welcome everyone to Girls4Sports - let’s make a true difference together! And always remember - WE MATTER!
